For over 25 years, the award-winning ArtWorks program has long-provided students in grades 9-12 with the unique opportunity to explore the creative economy through hands-on learning. Students work alongside a local artist mentor as they receive one-on-one instruction and feedback in their chosen medium through a 40-hour internship that coincides with the traditional school year.
Participating students grow as artists and entrepreneurs through the guidance of their mentors, building self-esteem, self-confidence, and soft skills that transfer beyond their art. ArtWorks creates a tangible path to working and supporting the creative economy, a sector that impacts a variety of industries year-round on Cape Cod and the Islands.
In understanding the importance of the creative economy in the region and the value ArtWorks plays in developing career pathways awareness, the program is now offered through three models to encourage greater accessibility and flexibility for students and mentors. Participants can engage in sessions via in-person, virtual, or hybrid models which helps to eliminate barriers to accessibility caused by financial hardships, transportation challenges, or health restrictions, including among the region’s most underserved populations.
ArtWorks culminates with an annual exhibit at a community-based gallery or public venue where students and mentors view the work of other artists, discuss their artist statements and what inspires their work, and celebrate their success with family and friends.
